Towson University Investigating Reported Assault As Possible Hate Crime
BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- School officials are investigating a possible hate crime at Towson University after two members of a Jewish frat reported being assaulted and harassed near campus early Sunday morning.
Baltimore County police were told by the two members of the frat, Alpha Epsilon Pi, that they were walking to a house in the unit block of Aigburth Road at 2:12 a.m. Sunday, when two suspects followed them and yelled ethnic slurs.
Officers were told that one of the suspects punched one of the victims in the face.
One of the victims called 911, and officers arrived at the scene and witnessed the two suspects standing over one of the victims and yelling at him, according to investigators.
Detectives say both suspects appeared intoxicated and were not arrested because the incident was a second-degree assault. The victims would have to press charges in order for the suspects to be prosecuted.
"I think with how diverse this campus is, it's surprising," one student said.
Police say the suspects are also students at Towson University but they have not been identified.
"It's just no fair. I feel for them deeply. I am not in there shoes I can't tell you exactly what they are going through, but at the end of the day it's just not right," student Isaiah Brown said.
"It's really a very sad part of life that's happening on college campuses today," said Jon Pierce, Alpha Epsilon Pi National Spokesperson. "The rise of anti-Semitic and anti-Israel incidents that are happening on college campuses is astounding."
Towson University said if the school's code of conduct has been violated, the suspects could be suspended or expelled.
The school says it's contacted the students who reported the incident and will support them.
Police say the fraternity members have one year to pursue charges.
