Towson University Announces Major Expansion
TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) -- Towson University announced one of their largest building expansions on campus. The school will be increasing space for their recreation programs.
Tracey Leong explains why.
Towson University will break ground on the $40 million project this fall. Towson University's Burdick Hall is getting a makeover, expanding services by 94,000 square feet and offering students a modern and spacious new fitness area.
"This is one of the university's priorities---student health and wellness. By doing so, we will continue that mission and give them the recreation space they need," said Director of Campus Recreation Grady Sheffield.
It will include two new multi-purpose athletic courts, five studios for group exercise classes and even an elevated hill for sprinting.
"I do believe it is important that we do have state-of-the-art facilities on campus as we continue to grow. It's important that our recreational services to the students grow, as well," said student Nathan Pursley.
An expansion that will accommodate and meet students' demands.
"Considering the campus size, we have more students and it can get very packed so I believe the expansion will allow more space," said student Victoria Ogunluie.
Towson University also plans to use it as a recruiting tool to attract more students.
"State of the art campus recreation fitness facility and be great for students to give them a place to recreate and get away from the academic stresses that they have and enhance overall well-being," Sheffield said.
The expansion should be complete by fall 2017. Burdick Hall will remain open during construction.
