Towson Native, College Lax Player Dies Suddenly In Florida
ORLANDO, Fla. (WJZ) -- A college lacrosse player from Maryland died suddenly Monday in Florida.
According to Winter Park Police, Will Hauver, 22, was found Monday afternoon in an off-campus apartment suffering from an unknown medical condition, the Associated Press reports. Hauver was taken to the hospital, but later died.
Sgt. Frank Cowart told the AP Tuesday that foul play was not suspected and that an investigation is ongoing.
According to Hauver's mother, he died from complications of the flu.
Lyndall Hauver told WJZ media partner The Baltimore Sun that her son was feeling sick on Sunday and was found unresponsive the next day.
Hauver was a senior at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. and captain of the Tars lacrosse team, who were slated to start their 2015 season Thursday.
He's from Towson, Md. where he attended the McDonogh School. Hauver played in 46 games for the Tars, according to Rollins College, with 13 goals and five assists. He was an active member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Hauver was supposed to graduate in May with a communications degree.
"Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family, teammates, and friends of Will Hauver," Director of Athletics Pennie Parker said in a statement. "He was a leader, not just on the lacrosse team, but also throughout the entire campus. He will be greatly missed."
A vigil was held Tuesday night on campus. Rollins College has a memorial page where people can leave memories of Hauver.
