Tony's, Home Of The Hillbilly Sandwich, Celebrates Its 50th Year In Business
DUNDALK, Md. (WJZ)—It's a popular breakfast and lunch place on Merritt Avenue. Tony's Carry Out has been a landmark in Dundalk for decades.
Ron Matz reports a special sandwich has been their trademark, and this week they're celebrating a big anniversary.
Judy Quattrochi is cooking up some great food. The small cinderblock building is home to Tony's Carry Out, a Dundalk destination for hungry customers, marking its 50th year in business.
"We're open from 5 in the morning until 1 in the afternoon. We're open six days a week. Everything's homemade," Quattrochi said.
Like the chicken noodle soup and meatballs. But Tony's trademark is breakfast on a roll. It's called the hillbilly.
"It's eggs, cheese, home fries and your choice of meat on a Kaiser roll. Our customers love them. It's our most famous sandwich," said Louise Judy, Tony's employee.
"A cook that worked for us many years ago kind of invented it and she named it the hillbilly," Quattrochi said. "It's been our famous sandwich ever since."
Tony's is a small place with a big heart.
"I've been coming here since I was a kid. They have homemade burgers. You get Southern comfort treatment, and everybody's humble to each other around here," said Antonio Richardson, customer.
Thirty years ago, a fire gutted the inside of Tony's, but customers helped get them back in business.
"I enjoy it. The people are really good. I have all my customers who come in and help me with repairs. Thirty years ago we had a fire and it gutted the inside. All the customers came down and helped us rebuild. Very good people down here and they treat me very, very well," Quattrochi said.
Some call Tony's a slice of hillbilly heaven, one of those places where everybody knows your name.
"We get a lot of early morning business. We have a lot of working people who come from Sparrows Point, the college, the marine terminal and things like that. It's a lot of businesses around here," Quattrochi said.
Tony's is planning a special sandwich to celebrate its 50th anniversary, a French toast breakfast club.
