1-year-old killed, three hospitalized in crash on I-495 after abduction of 3 children in Virginia Beach

BALTIMORE -- A 16-month-old infant was killed and three others were hospitalized after a man, suspected of abducting three kids, crashed his vehicle during a police pursuit on Maryland I-495 Thursday morning, according to Maryland State Police.

Amber alert issued

Virginia Beach Police Department issued an amber alert at 2:00 a.m. on Thursday.  

Just before 9 a.m., Maryland State Police received a call from Virginia State Police to help in a police pursuit. 

The suspected abductor, Dana Plummer, 37-years-old, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, was driving a black Honda Passport SUV traveling northbound towards Maryland.

Shortly after 9 a.m., the black Honda was spotted crossing the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.

Once in Prince George's County, Maryland, Plummer attempted to take a ramp towards southbound Route 5 Branch Avenue. The SUV then crashed into two vehicles causing it to overturn.  

Za'riyah Plumber, a 16-month-old, from Virginia Beach, was flown by Maryland State Police Aviation Command to Children's National Hospital in Washington, D.C. where she was pronounced dead by hospital staff.

Two minors were taken to Children's National Hospital by ground for medical treatment. They are identified as Zayin Plummer, 7-years-old, and Zayir Plummer, 5-years-old, both from Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Dana Plummer was taken to Capital Regional Medical Center for medical treatment.  

No other injuries were reported. 

Charges pending

Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation and consultation with the Prince George's County State's Attorney. 

The crash prompted all southbound lanes on Maryland I-495 to be closed, according to Maryland CHART. However, lanes have been reopened.

The Maryland State Police is leading the investigation into the crash. Virginia State Police is leading the investigation into the police pursuit.
