Thousands Apply For Amazon Jobs In Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The internet giant Amazon is bringing thousands of full time jobs to town and now they're looking for help.

As Mike Schuh reports, there was a wait to try to get a foot in the door.

Dundalk will soon be home to a new Amazon warehouse and 1,000 people will be needed to run it.

The path to those jobs starts in East Baltimore at a city jobs center.

Many are unemployed, out of work and hoping a job with Amazon will turn into a career.

So many people turned up Tuesday, the next time they recruit, it'll have to be in a larger facility.

Ryan Randolph, a part-time chef, wonders if his second chance is on the line.

"You can always fall but you can get back up," Randolph said. Fifteen or 16 years ago, he was convicted for distributing cocaine dealing in the illegal drug trade. "I feel that was the worst mistake I ever made in my life."

The people from Amazon can't talk about how they hire or who they hire or why, or if Randolph's record will exclude him, but he has hope that his computer application won't be rejected because of who he used to be.

"I feel I'm a person that is worth hiring because my attitude has changed, my views and characteristics on life has changed and I live a totally different lifestyle," Randolph said.

There's a sense of optimism that they can be one of the thousand new hires.

Two more sessions will happen Wednesday and another at the war memorial on Feb. 24.
