The Port Of Baltimore Earns National Recognition
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- It's considered one of the state's leading economic generators. Now, the Port of Baltimore is being recognized as the most efficient in the country.

When it comes to getting international shipments in and out quickly, the Port of Baltimore comes out on top.
According to a recent study from the Journal of Commerce, the Port of Baltimore and its Seagirt Marine Terminal are considered the most efficient in the country for the first half of 2015.
"When we're able to tell shipping companies around the world that we're the most efficient -- that's huge," said Richard Scher, Director of Communications for the Maryland Port Administration.
The JOC rankings take into account arrival times, container moves per hour and departure times.
The Port handles more autos, farming and construction machinery than any other port in the United States, which is something officials say is only possible thanks to it's 13,000 employees.
It's also one of the only two U.S. ports in the east coast capable of handling some of the largest ships in the world.
"It really says to international shippers that the port of Baltimore is an excellent place to bring their business," Scher said.
Earlier this month, the world's largest container shipping company began serving the port and the port's leading customer signed a new 30-year lease.
Governor Larry Hogan says the success of the port sends a powerful message.
"Maryland truly is open for business," he said.
The Port had a record year in 2014 with 29.5 million tons of international cargo valued at nearly $53 billion crossing its docks. It's on track to at least match those numbers this year.
