Thanksgiving Travel: Flight Delays, Traffic and Other Travel Information
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- As a winter storm heads to Maryland on one of the biggest travel days of the year, travelers heading home for Thanksgiving can expect delays whether they are driving or flying.
With lower gas prices, more Marylanders are expected to hit the roads this Thanksgiving. AAA Mid Atlantic estimated that 980,000 people would drive.
But bad weather could create some travel headaches. Snow is already falling in Maryland and it's expected to continue through the afternoon, while in Baltimore and points east, a wintry mix is expected and rain.
AIRPORTS:
BWI Thurgood-Marshall, Reagan International (DCA), Dulles International (IAD) airports are currently not reporting any major delays due to weather, according to the Federal Aviation Administration's website.
However, some flights are delayed at BWI as heavy snow falls in the area. WJZ's Derek Valcourt reports that the delays are 15 to 30 minutes and only a few are up to an hour. Even with the small delays, BWI travelers report the lines are not long. You can check your flight status here.
However, Philadelphia International Airport is reporting some delays of up to two hours due to weather, especially for flights headed to LaGuardia in New York City.
ROADWAYS:
No major road closures or delays have been reported at this time although there is precipitation falling is most areas. Follow @TheMDTA for the latest.
Area public works departments and MDOT are salting the roadways to help with snow and slush.
Snow is falling along the I-95 corridor and along I-695. Delays have been reported on I-95 north near Columbia. Heavier snow is falling across western Maryland along I-68 near the West Virginia line. Click here for current traffic conditions.
Frederick, Garrett, Washington and Carroll counties are under snow emergencies, according to the State Highway Administration.
