Student Shot Outside Dunbar High School
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- An 18-year-old student was shot Tuesday afternoon following a dispute outside of Dunbar High School, police said.
Officers responded at 3:21 p.m. to the 1400 block of Orleans Street for a shooting, where they found the man shot in the leg.
Police said students were outside the gym of the school when they were approached by an unknown group. A suspect then shot the student.
The victim was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say the student was involved in a conflict prior to the shooting.
Some of the school's students were outside of the school before the bell rang when they were approached by an unknown group, according to authorities.
Tension began to rise between the students and the group, prompting someone to fire a weapon, Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said following the shooting.
He said it was unclear if members of the unknown group were students too.
Their identities were partially masked because "they had hoods on," Chief of School Police Akil Hamm said.
Mayor Brandon Scott said investigators won't stop until the suspect is behind bars.
"We will be vigilant going down and tracking down these individuals who saw it fit to be so cowardly and hazardous to come on school grounds to shoot a student right outside the school building," Scott said.
Harrison expressed contempt for the ongoing violence.
"It frustrates all of us. It disgusts all of us," Harrison said.
Police say that they are planning to review video surveillance footage in the area to see if they can find the person who pulled the trigger.
