Delays Continue At BWI After Technical Issues With Major Airlines
LINTHICUM, Md, (WJZ/CBS) -- Travelers are still seeing the impacts of a technical glitch that triggered flight delays at BWI Airport on Monday.
The issues affected Southwest, Delta, JetBlue, Alaska and United flights around the U.S.
The Federal Aviation Administration told CBS News several carriers were "experiencing issues with a flight planning weight and balance program called Aerodata."
Southwest said it issued a ground stop as a result but lifted it after 40 minutes, adding it involved "an outage with a vendor that services multiple carriers with data used in flight planning. Scattered flight delays are anticipated and Customers should check Southwest.com for the latest updates on specific flights."
Passengers took to social media as the problems were taking place, demanding answers from the airlines.
The airlines spent Monday morning apologizing to delayed customers around the country.
However, the airlines are now reporting the the issue has been resolved, and schedules are starting to trend that way. But even later Monday, there was still red on the board at BWI.
The technical glitch grounded all Southwest flights and sent other airlines spiraling into a domino effect of delays.
"My father told me about it. He's like, 'Check your flights. Make sure they're not delayed," said traveler Devi Adea.
For Devi, it's just the latest travel hiccup, after a sudden flight cancellation last week extended her visit to the East Coast.
"Basically I delayed my flight by a week, and now I'm going back today, and I'm just a half hour delayed. Not a big deal," Adea said.
The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday's problem is tied to a flight planning program called Aerodata.
The contractor measures weight and balance to determine if flights can take off.
But, a nationwide program outage affected Southwest, Delta, Jetblue, Alaska and United Airlines- causing a major trickle down in delays at BWI and other major airports around the country.
Both arrivals and departures are delayed. Make sure to check with your airline before heading to the airport to check the status of your flight.
