Sykesville Man Charged In 1996 Rape In Baltimore
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore police have charged a Sykesville man with a rape in 1996.
Thirty-eight-year-old Gary Nelson was arrested Saturday and charged with rape, kidnapping and assault. He is being held without bail.
According to charging documents, Nelson met the victim on Pennington Avenue on Nov. 13, 1996 and sexually assaulted her in a car lot.
After the attack, the woman was taken to a hospital for a forensic exam.
Police say in 2003, the state DNA database matched Nelson's. It was assigned to a cold case detective in January.
A department spokesman says it was not known why it took so long for a suspect to be arrested.
