Suspect Shot After Robbery & Police Pursuit
BALTIMORE HIGHLANDS, Md. (WJZ) -- A chase through two counties and the city as police race after a suspect waving a gun out his window. It all ends in a quiet Baltimore County neighborhood with gunfire.
Alex DeMetrick has the details.
The Baltimore Highlands neighborhood in Baltimore County went from quiet to wild at lunch time.
"I was in my house with my sister, and the next thing you know our friends are calling us, saying that somebody got shot and the school's on lockdown. And I'm like, 'What's going on here?'" said Kristen White.
According to police, it started Wednesday night with a robbery in Baltimore County, where a white Chevy was seen. It was spotted again Thursday morning by Anne Arundel County Police, who chased it back north.
"The suspect driving the white Chevy Malibu was waving a gun outside the vehicle as it traveled up 97," said Elise Armacost, Baltimore County Police spokesperson.
It ended with a crash, but not before State Police and Baltimore Police joined the pursuit.
The 19-year-old suspect entered a residential neighborhood and struck Anne Arundel County police vehicles in the area of Virginia Avenue and Fenor Road.
"He bails out of his vehicle," Armacost said. "He is armed."
Police say the suspect had the gun pointed at his own head. Officers ordered him to drop the gun. He refused and pointed the gun at the officers.
At that time one officer from Baltimore County and one officer from Anne Arundel County discharged their weapons. The suspect was shot in the lower body.
It's not believed he fired any shots.
The suspect's gun could be seen in the gutter. The officer's guns were also taken as evidence by detectives. Bullets were counted in the clips of the seized weapons, and shell casings marked in the street. A bullet hole could be seen in the suspect's car.
"This is ridiculous in this neighborhood," said Craig Kittle. "This is a nice neighborhood that shouldn't have to go through all this stuff."
"All these people here, they're probably worried. You know, they'll all have their doors locked and stuff tonight," said Duane Sheeder.
Police say it's not clear if the suspect ended up here deliberately or by chance.
The suspect was taken to Shock Trauma. His condition is not known, but charges are pending.
An Anne Arundel County officer also received minor injuries when his vehicle was struck by the suspect's vehicle. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
The shooting happened near Baltimore Highlands Elementary, which was locked down. No one there was hurt.
