Suspect In Hospital Attack Plans Insanity Defense
ELKTON, Md. (AP) -- A man accused of attacking staff members at an Elkton hospital has filed a not criminally responsible motion in court.
Felix Monroy, 31, of Warwick was indicted on attempted murder charges and other offenses in the April 17 attack at Union Hospital. On Friday, Thomas L. Klenk, Monroy's assistant public defender, filed the not criminally responsible motion in Cecil County Circuit Court. The motion is the equivalent of an insanity plea.
The Cecil Whig reports that Monroy's trial, scheduled to start Oct. 31, has been postponed.
Police say Monroy, who was a patient at the hospital, beat a nurse with a plastic pitcher inside the fourth-floor psychiatric ward, then attacked several other employees and set a small fire inside a bathroom. The hospital workers suffered minor injuries.
