BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A millions dollars in damage. New details in the arrest of the man police say set fire to a CVS pharmacy in the middle of the April riots.
Derek Valcourt reports the suspect just had a court hearing.
A federal judge told told that suspect he faces a minimum of five years in prison and a maximum of 20 years if he is convicted on this single arson charge.
Smoke billowed from the CVS store at Penn and North avenues for hours on April 27. Raymon Carter, 24, is now accused of starting the fire inside that city police say caused $1 million dollars in damages.
Federal authorities say security cameras captured images of Carter starting the fires.
"The help from the public was invaluable," said David Sheplak, ATF.
ATF agents say after the media showed pictures of the suspect, tips poured in, allowing authorities to track down Carter in the Federal Hill area.
"It's important for people to know that these crimes aren't going to be ignored, that these individuals are going to be held accountable for their dangerous actions," said Sheplak.
"Somebody has to pay for what's happened," said Sheryl Wright, CVS customer.
Wright, who used the CVS store, is glad to hear of an arrest.
"They should know there's cameras inside and out, so they can't get away with it," she said.
ATF agents say they're still tracking down leads and asking for help identifying the people in pictures responsible for some of the other fires in the city during the riots.
Police are issuing a warning:
"For those who have destroyed our stores, who thrown rocks at our officers--we're coming," said Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts.
A federal judge ordered another court hearing for Carter on Tuesday to determine if he should be held in jail while he awaits trial.
Anyone with information on the suspects in the other fires is urged to call the ATF at 1-888-ATF-FIRE.
