Superstorm Sandy Killed 7,000 Md. Hatchery Trout
ACCIDENT, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland Department of Natural Resources says Superstorm Sandy killed more than 7,000 trout at a western Maryland trout hatchery in October.
A state fisheries official told the Cumberland Times-News Thursday that a lightning bolt killed 7,000 trout instantly, and 400 died later.
The fish accounted for about 10 percent of the trout at the Bear Creek Hatchery near Accident.
The agency says heavy snow and high winds brought down 35 trees onto hatchery buildings, vehicles, power lines and telephone lines. The hatchery was without power or telephone service for nearly two weeks.
The DNR says there will be no decrease in the number of trout stocked in western Maryland streams and lakes as a result of the storm.
