Students Thrilled About New Pope Announcement
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A new pope has been elected and students at Loyola University are excited about Pope Francis.
Gigi Barnett reports students watched and waited for hours.
Loyola is a Catholic university and a Jesuit one.
Pope Francis is a Jesuit, which means that he's part of an order of priests that are educators.
The wait for a new pope is over.
"It just caught me by surprise," said a student.
"I'm a little shocked. I thought it might take a little more time," said another student.
As thousands in Rome celebrated, the joy has reached Baltimore.
They say they would like a pope who can reach younger audiences and that he will have a special meaning for this Jesuit university. It's also the first non-European pope.
"I would be a little bit more comfortable with a pope that's a little bit older because that's tradition but I feel like the pope does need to be a bit more in tune with what's going on in the world," a student said.
Students are happy there's a pope in plenty of time for Easter.
Pope Francis is the 266th pope. He is from Argentina.
