Cannabis Cookies? Treats Passed Around Local HS May Have Been Laced
BALTIMORE(WJZ) – Baltimore City Police are investigating whether students at REACH! Partnership School ingested cookies laced with a drug.
Christie Illeto reports one parent says her daughter tested positive for marijuana after eating a cookie.
Cookies made with a drug-- that's what Baltimore City Police believe a group of students at REACH! Partnership School ingested earlier this week during school hours.
"Right now I'm just furious," said Carmalita Stokes.
Stokes says her daughter ate the so-called laced cookie and was tested at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
"The doctor from Johns Hopkins just called me and said my daughter tested positive for marijuana," Stokes said.
REACH! is a secondary school for grades 6-12. Students WJZ spoke to Thursday did not want their faces on camera but say the sugar cookies were somehow being distributed amongst some of their senior classmates.
The students say a staff member at the school distributed the cookies but would not identify the person.
Meanwhile, parents like Linda Hughes, whose daughter also ingested the substance in question, are outraged.
"What kind of message does this send to the students?" Hughes said.
Baltimore City Schools, tightlipped on the matter, say: "The incident that occurred at the REACH! Partnership School remains under investigation. Meanwhile, it's our practice not to comment on personnel issues."
Stokes' and Hughes' daughters are back in school. Both mothers say they still want answers.
"Are they going to press charges against this individual? What are they going to do about this? What about the other kids?" Stokes said.
Parents say answers will ease their mounting concerns on what they call an inappropriate matter.
WJZ spoke to one student that says she thought the cookie was just a regular dessert, but after eating it felt disoriented and dizzy.
Police say the child abuse unit is working with the states attorney's office.
