Students At Morgan State Rally In Support Of Trayvon Martin
BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- Some key police video is renewing outrage about the killing of Trayvon Martin. The unarmed Florida teen was shot by a neighborhood watch captain. And now, local students are standing up to support Martin.
Andrea Fujii has more on this latest rally.
Students at Morgan State University say the newly-released video casts even more doubt that the 17-year-old was shot in self-defense.
"I am Trayvon Martin!"
Cries for justice are heard around the country and now at Morgan State University.
"We are aware of the stereotypes that are currently happening in the Trayvon Martin case and we're here to show that we're aware of what's happening around us," Brenda Fort, a Morgan State student, said.
And as police release new evidence, students say it only fuels more questions.
Surveillance video from the Sanford, Fla. police department shows George Zimmerman the night he shot an unarmed Martin.
George Zimmerman's lawyer claims he acted in self-defense after Martin broke his nose.
Robert Zimmerman, George Zimmerman's father, told a Florida TV station, the teenager "continued to beat George, and at some point, George pulled his pistol and did what he did."
But the Martin family attorney says the video shows no evidence of injury to George Zimmerman. After police questioned the neighborhood watchman, they let him go.
At the Morgan rally, students donned orange Xs they say are symbols that the case stretches across racial lines.
"To exemplify that it could be me, it could be you next. So it's who's next. We're all a target," Chinedeu Nwokeafor, a Morgan State student, said.
And as they marched away from campus, they say the hope to spread the message that the 17-year-old won't be forgotten.
"There's many Trayvon Martin-situations that don't even get recognized," said Morgan State student Kennan Richardson. "That happens every day in every community any state."
Florida police continue to examine that surveillance video and 911 calls. They say the investigation could take weeks.
George Zimmerman claims he was following Martin because he looked suspicious after there had been a number of burglaries in the area.
