Stranger Stabs Woman On Greyhound Bus, Yells That He Has AIDS
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Bus attack! A woman is stabbed multiple times while riding a Greyhound bus in Baltimore. The stranger who did it is on the loose.
Meghan McCorkell has more on the search.
Police tell WJZ they believe they do know the identity of the attacker, and now they are working to hunt him down.
Greyhound bus number 86178 remains parked at the Baltimore terminal, a sign in the window saying "do not use" after a horrifying incident Thursday night.
Investigators say the bus was traveling from Atlantic City, N.J. to Baltimore. It was on Russell Street, near the terminal, when a man exited the bus bathroom, pulled out a knife and stabbed a woman sitting in the rear seat.
"Witnesses told us there was some sort of verbal altercation, almost a dispute on the bus. At some point, the suspect pulled out a sharp object and stabbed the victim several times," said Detective Jeremy Silbert with Baltimore City Police.
A friend of the woman punched the attacker and forced him off the bus. As he left, the man screamed "I have AIDS." The bus driver then locked the doors.
Investigators say when the man couldn't get back on the bus, he took off running.
A Greyhound spokesperson tells WJZ the company is cooperating with the investigation.
"Our customer safety is our primary concern and our driver followed procedure and handled the situation well," Lanesha Gipson said.
"We'll look to see if there was any surveillance in the area and also talk to witnesses," Silbert said.
There are several businesses in the area. Greyhound officials say there was also a camera on the bus.
"We have what is called a 'drive cam' that the bus was equipped with. I'm not sure how much of this incident the drive cam was able to capture," Gipson said.
Investigators hope those clues lead to an arrest.
Again, police say they do believe they know the identity of the attacker. When he's caught, he is expected to be charged with aggravated assault.
The victim underwent surgery at Shock Trauma on Thursday night and was listed in serious condition.
