Steve Melewski Talks Orioles And Gives Injury Updates
MASN's Steve Melewski joined the Scott Garceau Show with Jeremy Conn to talk Chris Tillman's dominant start to the season, Zach Britton's sinker and to give an update on some injured Orioles.
Chris Tillman has been the dominant guy the Orioles have needed at the top at the rotation so far this season. Tillman is 9-1 with a 2.87 ERA after going seven innings and only giving up one run against Boston last night. Melewski talked about Tillman's remarkable start to 2016. "The four pitch mix he's had this year has been pretty special. Not only the quality of the pitches, but commanding them. Being able to go to that slider, which has big been for him this year, but so has the change and curveball."
Zach Britton is a perfect 20 for 20 in saves opportunities this season. Melewski gave his thoughts on Britton's unhittable sinker. "His sinker is one of the best individual pitches in baseball. It has so much going for it, starting with velocity. Most guys who sink the ball cannot sink it anywhere near 96 to 98. And then on top of that, it's the late movement…if it's 98, and it's moving late, it's just really so hard for even the best hitters to square up."
Melewski also gave updates on injured Orioles, Darren O'Day and J.J. Hardy. "When I was in Toronto this weekend I asked [O' Day] how it's going…he wasn't at the point where he was even doing many baseball activities, so I don't think O' Day is close...The soonest I would think we see [Hardy] would be Friday, but that seems ambitious."
