Steve Davis: Who Could Be O's All-Stars?
Last year, the Orioles had 5 guys make the All-Star team: Jones, Wieters, Machado, Hardy, Tillman. That seems unlikely this year.
Wieters is leading all AL catchers in voting right now with 540,000 votes, with McCann next at 373,000. That is surprising. I know Wieters is hitting great, but he has missed more games than he has played this year. If he doesn't come back, he won't make the team.
Jones is 7th in voting for outfielders. That is kind of surprising to me, although I still think he will make it as a back-up.
Hardy is 3rd for shortstops. He has no homers, although his average is very good. If he doesn't start knocking some out, he is unlikely to make the team.
Davis is 4th for first basemen. Cabrera, Pujols and the rookie Abreu are all ahead of him, and having better years so it is not looking good for Davis.
Manny is 4th in voting at 3rd. He won't win the vote, but there is still time for him to climb the ladder and make the team.
Nelson Cruz is the Orioles best player right now. He is 2nd behind David Ortiz in DH voting. As great a year as Cruz is having, it might be tough to win the popularity contest with Ortiz, but he should still make the team as a back-up.
Based on how they are performing, I think someone from the bullpen can make it. Britton and O'Day are 2 of the best relievers in the league, so I think one of them has a shot.
Right now, I am going with Jones and Cruz as almost sure things, Manny as a long shot, and a bullpen reliever as a glimmer of hope. But, there's more than a month until they pick the team so plenty will change between now and then.
