Steve Davis: What's Next For Spieth?
My gut tells me that he will be fine, that he is too talented and too mature to let what happened at the Masters ruin his career.
However, it is in the conversation of the all-time chokes. There are others, no doubt about it. Jean Van de Velde with a triple bogey 7 on the final hole of the 1999 British. But he was a nobody and didn't squander a 5 shot lead in a matter of 3 holes. He choked for sure, but Spieth's was worse. Greg Norman blowing a 6 shot lead in the 96 Masters. But he didn't turn a 5 shot lead into a 4 shot deficit in a matter of 3 holes. Those are just a couple, and there are more, but this one will stick out for sure. When you have seen someone go birdie, birdie, birdie, birdie, then bogey, bogey, quadruple bogey? Not the best player in the world and defending champ.
I hope and assume he will be just fine, but since I have nothing to compare it to, I really am like everyone else, wondering what happens the next time he is out, and if this will haunt him for a while.
Now, the flip side is that a guy with his unique skill maturity might actually use this to catapult him further, that this could make him more resilient in future; I hope so.
