Steve Davis: Term Limits for League Commissioners
I am making a pitch for term limits for the commissioners of the major sports. Right now, it's almost like a lifetime appointment.
The NFL has only had 3 in the history of the league: Rozelle, Tagliabue and now Goodell. David Stern just ruled the NBA for almost 3 decades. Selig ran MLB for over 2 decades and Bettman has been in charge of the NHL for a long time (since 1993).
The reason I suggest this is seeing what the new commissioners in MLB and NBA are doing.
Rob Manfred has already made his stance known on how HOF voters should look at candidates who may have juiced, wants to speed up pace of play and is going to change how the All-Star game is awarded. Fresh new ideas and he's only been on the job a couple weeks.
Adam Silver just threw out the possibility of changing the playoff structure to make sure the best teams get in.
I like the idea of new commissioners who are willing to embrace new ideas and breathe new life into the game. Roger Goodell should have been fired last year. No one seems to think he's doing a good job, but he keeps the job because the league is rolling in the dough. If the leagues had term limits, fans would constantly see leagues implementing new, fresh ideas.
