Steve Davis: Stunning Deal For Manning
The Peyton Manning deal is pretty stunning. 5 years, 96 million for a 36 year old quarterback coming off his 4th neck procedure. It's not a gimmick deal. It's basically 19 million a year. It makes him the highest paid player in the league at a time when he is likely on the decline.
I think he's an amazing player. But, to tie up up about 7% of your cap in a 36 year old player is a huge risk. I think he's taking a risk too. He's played his whole career at a home stadium indoors on turf. Now he's dealing with elements that could really dictate a passing game.
He's a smart guy, and I'm sure he made what he thought was the best decision, but I would be surprised if he wins another Super Bowl.
