Steve Davis: Retiring Ravens Numbers

Now that the careers of Jonathan Ogden, Ray Lewis and Ed Reed are finished in Baltimore (at least it seems unlikely Reed will ever play here again), what about retiring their numbers?

Here is what I would do.

I would have an unwritten rule that when a likely future hall of famer leaves the Ravens, either through retirement or otherwise, his number is not worn by another player.

When that player is elected to the Hall of Fame, I would retire that jersey number the subsequent season in a ceremony during halftime of a home game.

So, for J.O., I would retire 75 this year.

For Lewis and Reed, no one gets 52 or 20 for now, but they're officially retired when they are enshrined in Canton.

This is only for Hall of Famers, not Ring of Honor members.
