Steve Davis: Ravens Defense Really Clicking
I'm not about to compare this to the 2000 Ravens defense, but it looks like this defense could be an upper echelon defense. With the 5 sacks vs. Atlanta, the Ravens have had back to back 5 sack games for the first time in almost a decade; the last time was 2006. They have allowed the fewest points in the NFL.
Dig a little deeper and look at what the defense has done in the first half. Going from most recent to oldest, they shut out Atlanta and Tampa Bay the last 2 weeks in the first half. Prior to that, they allowed Indy 6, Carolina 7, Cleveland 7 and Pittsburgh 3 points. So, since allowing Cincinnati to score 15 first half points in the opener, the Ravens defense has given up an average of just 4 points in the first half.
The pass rush has come alive, as we've seen some new life out of Dumervil and Suggs. Watch out for Pernell McPhee, who has sacks in 3 straight games. Jernigan is back now and Canty should be back soon, improving things up front even more.
Webb looks like he has returned to form, giving the Ravens two top corners. I don't think Will Hill is the second coming of Ed Reed, but he improves the secondary.
Mosley and Smith are playing very well. It doesn't hurt that the Ravens aren't playing very good teams, but you can only play who is on your schedule.
