Steve Davis: Orioles Did Something Like This Before

It is pretty amazing what the Orioles did, sweeping 3 straight from the Tigers and beating 3 Cy Young winners.

Old time Orioles fans will think of 1966. That was the Orioles first Postseason trip. They were big underdogs vs. The Dodgers. They swept LA four straight, with three straight shutouts.

In Game 1, they knocked 1962 Cy Young winner Don Drysdale out in the third inning and won 5-2. Moe Drabowsky relived McNally and set a World Series record, striking out 11 hitters in 6 2/3 innings of relief pitching.

In Game 2, 20 year old Jim Palmer out-dueled Sandy Koufax, who had won 3 of the last 4 Cy Youngs, 6-0. Palmer pitched a complete game. Koufax was victimized by 3 Willie Davis errors, in one inning.

Game 3, Wally Bunker pitched a complete game, 6-hit shutout, as the O's beat the Dodgers 1-0.

And, in Game 4 Dave McNally got the better of Drysdale, as the O's won 1-0, with Frank Robinson belting a solo homer.

Not bad, huh!?

The Orioles started their run of 4 World Series appearances in 6 years by winning 4 in a row against a team that had future Hall of Famers Koufax and Drysdale starting 3 of the 4 games.
