Steve Davis: NCAA Sanctions On Penn State
The penalties imposed upon Penn State were massive, and it will take years, if ever, for Penn State to mount a top-notch football program.
One thing that struck me was how intent the NCAA was in making sure to alter Joe Paterno's legacy. By stripping Penn State of all its victories from 1998-2011, Paterno went from 1st to 12th on the all-time victories list. This strikes me as overkill. I support a harsh penalty for Penn State, but we don't have the luxury of re-writing history. Penn State won those games. I have a hard time telling the players that competed in those games that they didn't win.
What happened at Penn State was deplorable, but I am not convinced that vacating the wins was the appropriate course of action.
