Steve Davis: Judging Joe Flacco
It continues to be a test in patience watching Joe Flacco. I have no issues with the Ravens giving Joe the huge contract, so let's start with that. They had two choices, pay him or let him go. I would not have let him go, so that means you have to pay him.
However, he continues his up and down play.
After the pick six, he said he didn't see the defender Bass in front of him, and that he wasn't really looking for him. The guy was standing right in front of you! It's like he was dropped in front of you by a carrier pigeon. He didn't come from your blindside. You have to see him so you know whether or not you have to throw it over him.
Even more egregious to me was the interception at the end of the first half. You're up 17-10, there's 1:07 left, you are on your own 22 and it is third and 16. Now, I would have not thrown it there. It just seemed unrealistic to think you could gain enough yards to get in field goal range. But, if you are going to throw it, then be smart. That was a dumb decision and a dumb throw.
At the end of the game, they ran it on 2nd down inside the 5. Phil Simms said they should have never run it against that defense.
So, I guess what I don't understand is if you are turning the offense over to Joe, and he continues to make poor decisions, then why do you continue to give him that power?
Joe has had a phenomenal career so far, but we continue to wait for something more, and sometimes I wonder if we will ever get it.
