Steve Davis: Gausman Shows He Belongs
My feeling on Kevin Gausman going into Sunday's game was: 3 strikes and you're out. And, he already had 2 strikes.
His first 2 outings were not good enough to help the Orioles win. I thought that, even though he has a bright future, if he pitched like that again, the Orioles should probably send him down. Not because I was giving up hope, but more that, being in a playoff race, they can't afford to be throwing away starts.
Maybe he just isn't quite ready.
Gausman pitched great on Sunday. He has definitely earned another start, but more than that, gave us all reason to believe he might be up for good.
Did you see Miguel Cabrera, the best hitter on the planet, nod at Gausman after he fouled off a nasty 2-2 pitch? That was Cabrera saying "pretty good stuff you've got Kid." And then..... Gausman STRUCK OUT Cabrera.
That was a great outing, and should have people very excited about his future. Don't expect it every time, but that was a great glimpse of what could lay ahead.
