Steve Davis: Flaw In Baseball Playoffs
Do you realize that if the Cardinals advance to the World Series like it appears they will (they are leading the NLCS 3 games to 1), the 2 worst teams that made the playoffs will play for the distinction of being baseball's best team?
The Tigers had the 7th best record in the 14 team American League. Think about that, they were middle of the pack. The Cardinals had the 5th best mark in the NL. And yet, because of baseball's abbreviated playoff format of a play-in and 2 best of five series, they look to be the last 2 standing.
What is the point of the regular season if the playoffs aren't going to be long enough to truly determine the best team?
