Steve Davis: Assault at Camden Yards
Most people probably know by now that a fan was assaulted last week at Camden Yards.
He was there for the Orioles and Nats game and was wearing a Yankees hat. We had a witness to the incident call into the show who said that the fan and his date were being heckled for a quite a while, and then had a beer thrown on them.
The fan went over to the people that did it, and got punched, hit his head on the concrete, and ended up in shock trauma with a serious head injury.
Someone called to the show and said he was asking for it by wearing a Yankees hat.
The sad thing is that the caller had a point. I by no means hold the fan that wore the Yankees hat responsible for what happened to him because of what he wore.
That said, unfortunately, if you were your team's gear into a rivals stadium, you have to be aware of the fact that there a lot of jerks out there, and those jerks can become bullies and criminals when you add beer to the mix.
This is a terrible tragedy.
Hopefully, the fan will be okay.
It is also a reminder, and an unfortunate one at that, that you have to be careful how much you express support for your team. It is a sad statement about society.
I tell people all the time: if you wear Ravens gear to a Steelers game, you better be careful, particularly if you go to a bathroom by yourself.
