Steve Davis: Another Outrageous MLB Contract

Giancarlo Stanton just agreed to a 13 year $325 million dollar contract with the Marlins. Based on our research, it is the largest contract ever given to a team sport athlete in any sport on the planet.

It is guaranteed, although Stanton can opt out after 5 years. Why would he? If he thinks someone will give him more.

Think that's crazy? A-Rod opt out of his first ridiculous contract... and got more.

This deal doesn't make much sense to me.

The Marlins had the lowest payroll last year and the fourth lowest attendance. People don't go to games in Miami. Maybe it's because they don't spend money, although they spent a lot more on star players several years ago, and the fans didn't show up. Now, in terms of annual salary, he isn't the highest paid athlete in baseball. However, he isn't even eligible for free agency for two years, so he wouldn't be.

To put this in perspective, or to show how out of perspective this is, Stanton will make about: $2853/hour, $17,000/inning, $43000/at bat, $163,000/hit and $813,000/home run (if he averages 30 homers for the next 13 seasons).

It just doesn't make good business sense. Not only that, he hasn't played since he was hit in the face. What if he never gets over it?

Dumb move. Dumb franchise.
