Steelers QB Donates K-9 Unit Grant To Fire Department In Maryland
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (WJZ)—Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is distributing a grant to the K-9 unit of a Maryland fire department.
The Hagerstown Fire Department will receive the seventh grant of the 2013-14 season from the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation at The Giving Back Fund.
The Hagerstown Fire Department will use the grant to purchase a trained explosives detection K-9 and training for the new dog's handler.
"We are so grateful the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation recognizes this need in our community, and we're even more excited to have an explosives detection K-9 dedicated to the fire department," said Hagerstown Fire Department Chief Kyd Dieterich. "This will significantly improve response times for those calls where there's a greater potential for damage to people and property. With this grant, the Hagerstown Fire Department will be able to provide greater services to our citizens without any cost to the taxpayers."
During the 2013-14 NFL season, The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation will be distributing grants to K-9 units of police and fire departments in the cities and surrounding communities of each regular season away game for the Steelers.
The foundation distributed more than $135,000 in grants to K-9 units around the country during the 2012 NFL season and has distributed in excess of $1 million since 2007.
