State Help Eyed To Save Western Md. Civil War Site
CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland Historical Trust says an effort is under way to preserve a Civil War battle site near Cumberland.
The Cumberland Times-News reports the crumbling stone foundation of Folck's Mill marks the spot where Union soldiers led by Brig. Gen. Benjamin Kelly prevented Confederate troops from attacking Cumberland.
Historical Trust Director J. Rodney Little says preservation funds may be available if the Canal Place Heritage Area in downtown Cumberland is expanded to include Folck's Mill. The site is off Interstate 68 Exit 46 near the unincorporated community of Naves Crossroad.
The National Park Service says the skirmish on Aug. 1, 1864, blocked the Confederates from disrupting B&O Railroad operations in Cumberland. The agency says there were 38 casualties.
