Sports Culture: ESPN Zone Baltimore to shut down?

It is being said that Disney will shut down most of their ESPN Zone restaurants.. I will be sad to see the ESPN Zone in Baltimore go as it became one of my favorite Inner Harbor landmarks.  It started with a big splash on Saturday, July 11th 1998...

Remember all of the hype the grand opening received? It was the biggest Baltimore red carpet event of the summer (short of the grand opening of Planet Hollywood..hey, does that place even still exist?) complete with spotlights and celebrities.  I was lucky enough to be invited to cover the event for local media.

More inside...

Everywhere you looked, there were stars like Vanessa Williams or sports greats like Michael Jackson, most of the Orioles who had a game that day and some of the Ravens.  The food spread was out of this world complete with the best seafood, filet mignon, and other delicacies around.  In fact, the typical ESPN Zone fare was nowhere to be found that night.  After that night, I would frequent the place for lunch quite a bit as I lived in the Inner Harbor and it was just a short walk from my home.  I loved the big screen tv's and reclining chairs and while the food wasn't as grand as what the opening night gala had offered, it wasn't bad for the price.  Many of friends and family did I spend time there with.. Sad to see it go.  I think some of the best fun I had there was during the Ravens playoff games..Our fans know how to bring it..
