Special Invitation For Students Directly Impacted By Baltimore Riots
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A special invitation for students directly impacted by the April riots in Baltimore.
Students from the Sandtown-Winchester community have been asked to join Step Afrika! next week at Howard University.
They will get a chance to see interactive, educational dance works, including a new Freddie Gray-inspired piece.
"The work will reflect on what's happening across the country with African-American boys and the particular challenges they face not only in targeted communities, but in the media as well," said Williams. "We want to consider the role that art and Step Afrika!'s work in particular can play in healing, while exploring ways that the arts can nurture and even correct such imbalances."
Step Afrika! -- celebrating its 20th anniversary -- is the world's first dance company dedicated to stepping.
The company hopes to share its message of strength, hope and cultural appreciation.
"Baltimore is our sister city and we felt a calling to connect with the young people there and remind them that the community cares and has not forgotten," said Step Afrika! Founder & Executive Director C. Brian Williams. "Step Afrika! truly loves to perform and have fun, but a main component of our mission is to educate, mentor and serve as cultural ambassadors – internationally, and across city and state borders as well."
