Southwest Plane Makes Emergency Landing At Baltimore Airport
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A Southwest Airlines flight with 135 people aboard had to make an emergency landing at Baltimore's international airport Tuesday night.
Flight 1805 from Aruba landed at Baltimore-Washington International Marshall Airport just before 9 p.m. after a problem with the wing flaps.
Southwest Airlines spokesperson Chris Mainz says the captain declared the emergency landing "out of an abundance of caution."
Passenger Neysa Condron was onboard with her daughters, returning from a vacation.
"I heard a click, like they were probably trying to put the flaps down. It dawned on me later that that's what that was," she said.
She told WJZ the pilot announced an issue with the wing flaps.
"They said we're having a problem with the wings, the flaps that would come up for landing to brake us," Condron said.
She and her daughters watched on the Southwest Airlines phone app as the plane then circled for about an hour. She said, the pilot explained to passengers that the crew was waiting for directions from the ground.
Finally announcing that the plane would make a so-called "fast landing," and that the tires may blow in the process.
Photos show firefighters waiting on the runway as the plane came in.
Cell phone video by Andy Acuna shows the plane's final moments before landing.
"As we landed, you could just see them converge on the plane and just follow us down the runway," Condron said.
BWI spokesman Jonathan Dean said the flight landed "safely without incident."
Southwest Airlines said the plane is out of service and will be inspected. The cause of the problem is currently unclear.
In a statement to WJZ, a Southwest Airlines spokesperson wrote that the plane's "Captain declared an emergency landing out of an abundance of caution."
Ultimately bringing the Condron family home safely, and with one final vacation story to tell.
No injuries to the 130 passengers and five crew members were reported.
