Snow Piles Up In Far Western Maryland
MCHENRY, Md. (WJZ) -- A spring nor'easter slammed Maryland and several other states.
Alex DeMetrick has a look at the snowy conditions in western Maryland.
It may have been rain in most of Maryland, but not here.
"Most of the snow's right here on top," said snow plow driver Brian Palmer.
On top of Keyser's Ridge, it's been blowing in on and off since midnight.
"It's been like this all morning---wet, cold and the wind blowing," said trucker Curly Burpee.
The late April snow meant a lot of equipment that had been put up for winter had to gear up and hit the road.
"Since we've had such pretty weather, a lot of our plows and spreader boxes and stuff were off because we're getting ready for our spring inspection so I brought the crews in last night around 10," said Rick Cosner, SHA Garrett County.
Trucks and crews did make it out in time to keep the interstate and main roads open in Garrett County. But for those who weren't in a hurry, waiting the weather out was a safer option.
"I've been stuck here since last night," Burpee said.
Some were equipped for the unexpected stay at the top of Maryland, although the delay certainly wasn't on the itinerary---not when it was warm just a few days ago.
"I was expecting to wear shorts. I had shorts on the other day," said traveler Bart Spirnak.
"For a snow bird, this is not fun," said traveler Mar-Dee Finch.
Several inches of snow this time of the year isn't unheard of, but it is still rare enough to use caution passing through.
"The main thing to do is slow down and be careful," said Cosner.
There were very few accidents reported.
