Sinkhole Closes East Monument Street, Causes Gas Leak
BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- East Monument Street between Patterson Park and Milton avenues is closed due to a sinkhole. The sinkhole has also caused a gas leak.
Capt. Jeff Long has more.
The Baltimore Department of Public Works (DPW) discovered the sinkhole at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday and is bringing additional equipment to address stop the gas leak and close the sinkhole. The street has been closed since then.
The DPW said the sinkhole is an opening into an 120-inch storm drain channel that was installed in 1930.
Baltimore City fire and police departments and the Mayor's Office of Emergency Management are on the scene with the DPW. The DPW said there was no timetable on when the sinkhole would be fixed.
