Shelter In Place Lifted At U. of Md. After Off-Campus Robbery
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- It was a tense afternoon at the University of Maryland, College Park, after two suspects fled the scene of a robbery and led police on a manhunt on campus.
WJZ's Devin Bartolotta reports that the search for those suspects forced an emergency alert and shelter in place order for students and faculty.
The incident began in an off campus home in the 8800 block of 36th Place, where police say an assault took place. Police also say it was not a random attack.
"Preliminarily, we have suspects that forced entry into the home, assaulted the victims, stole property and then fled the scene," says Cpl. Nicole Hubbard, of the Prince George's County Police Department.
One of the suspects was armed with a handgun.
A shelter in place warning lit up phones and loud speakers.
"We got a message over the intercom that the building we were in was locked down," says student Anthony Horodowicz. "They suggested we stay in."
Eventually, police arrested both suspects and lifted the shelter in place.
Neighbors say most homes on 36th Avenue, where the burglary took place, are rented to students.
The area is now the center of a police investigation.
Police have not said what was stolen from the home, or where the suspects were ultimately arrested.
