Shawne Merriman Talks About His Coat Drive

Former Maryland Terrapin and NFL star Shawne Merriman joined Scott and Jeremy, with Ken Weinman filling in for Scott, Tuesday afternoon to discuss his coat drive. The Lights On Foundation has again partnered with the Maryland Athletics Department, University Relations and DOTS (Department of Transportation Services), and will be joined by Maryland student-athletes to collect gently-used coats, hats, scarves and other cold weather clothing at all entrances of Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. The coat drive will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23 before the game against the Boston College Eagles.

Ken and Jeremy started off the interview by asking Shawne about Maryland making the move from the ACC to the Big Ten.

"It hasn't hit me yet. I'm sure it will that day of the game, with that being the last time we'll be in that conference. But I'm sure it will be a great thing for the school. It's another opportunity to get more in state recruits to stay home from the Maryland, D.C., and Virginia area because of the talent that we will be playing."

Shawne even went on to say that being the honorary captain for the last ACC game will mean a lot to him.

The conversation transitioned from Shawne's foundation to when he started the coat drive. "I started it at the University of Maryland, in my sophomore year is when I held my first Lights On coat drive, so all the people that have helped over the past 11 years have been great and as many people can come and support can change a life out there."

Shawne says the foundation averages 4,200-7,500 coats in the past 11 years and the drive continues to grow each year. For more information on his coat drive go to www.shawnemerriman.com. Then click on news and the event information is listed on the page.
