Severstal Seeks Dismissal Of Mill Pollution Suit
BALTIMORE (AP) -- The former owners of the Sparrows Point steel mill are asking a judge to dismiss a suit filed by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz is scheduled to hear arguments Friday in Baltimore.
Attorneys for former owner Severstal North America argue the judge does not have jurisdiction because of an ongoing consent decree with the state and federal government.
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation says the plant continues to pollute the bay and is seeking emergency action to stop hazardous waste from reaching adjacent waters.
Severstal announced last week that it had sold the plant to the Renco Group Inc. Attorney Jon Mueller said the foundation and other plaintiffs haven't decided whether to take action against the new owners.
