Suspect In 3 Deadly Shootings Spanning 2 Days, 2 Counties, In Custody
ASPEN HILL, Md. (WJZ) -- Eulalio Tordil, the 62-year-old suspect in Thursday's Prince George's County high school shooting and two Friday shootings in Montgomery County, is in police custody. He has been charged with murder for the fatal shooting Thursday.
Rick Ritter reports one man and one woman were killed and another man was critically injured in Friday's attacks at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda and an Aspen Hill shopping center.
"At this point, it appears to be domestic violence," an official said.
Tordil was arrested in another shopping center, right across the street from the one where Friday's second shooting took place.
"Events today unfolded very, very rapidly," an official said.
Police say plainclothes officers who were in the area investigating the shooting spotted Tordil's car in the parking lot, and then watched him walk out of a Dunkin' Donuts and toward that vehicle.
"We certainly did not want to have any other bloodshed," said Montgomery County Police Chief Thomas Manger.
They took him into custody without incident. His weapon was in the car.
Police say Tordil was in and out of several of the businesses in the strip mall throughout the afternoon, and witnesses say he ate lunch in a Boston Market.
The restaurant is the same one where the D.C. sniper John Allen Muhammad was known to have eaten one day during the height of that crisis in 2002.
The Montgomery County Police Department first responded Friday to the Westfield Montgomery Mall for a report of shooting around 11 a.m.
They say there was a confrontation in the Macy's parking lot. One person was shot. Two others then came over to help and were also shot.
Police say two men and a woman were taken to area hospitals for treatment. One of those men later died from his injuries. The other man is listed in critical condition. The woman suffered non-life threatening injuries.
A short time later, police were called to the scene of another shooting in Aspen Hill. Police say a woman was shot and killed in her car near the Giant grocery store in the 13700 block of Connecticut Avenue.
Police are not sure if Tordil has a personal connection to any of the people who were shot Friday.
The woman who was shot and killed at High Point High School in Beltsville on Thursday was Tordil's estranged wife.
Montgomery County Police say they were attempting to track Tordil's movements since Thursday's shootings, but were unable to do so.
"It's tragic that we were not able to intervene before additional victims being shot," said Prince George's County Police Chief Hank Stawinski.
Montgomery County police say Tordil's daughter was brought to headquarters in Gaithersburg for questioning.
His car and two of the vehicles belonging to victims of Friday's shootings were also brought to the station.
