Several People Shot On The Campus Of Towson University
TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) -- Baltimore County Police are investigating a triple shooting at Towson University that left one student and two others injured overnight Saturday.
All three victims are adults and expected to be OK after being treated at area hospitals.
Detectives are now working to find out who pulled the trigger.
Police say this all stemmed from a nonsanctioned gathering on campus.
Videos posted on social media show a large group of people gathered at Freedom Square overnight near the academic buildings.
This is an area where students say many hang out throughout the day.
The shooting has many students on edge.
"People are just like, 'Geez, it's the first weekend,'" student Gabriel Donahue said.
Student Kai Maclang agreed: "It's very shocking. Talking to some people, they're definitely scared as well, just as much as me. You know, it could have been any one of us. We could have gotten there at the wrong time."
Baltimore County Police said it happened at the center of campus in Freedom Square at 2 a.m. where a large gathering was held.
The video from social media posted on YouTube of what appeared to be right before shots rang out showing hundreds of people packed at the square.
"It wasn't actually a university-sanctioned or approved event," said Sean Welsh, interim vice president for communications.
Officers said they found a female student and two other victims who aren't students injured on the scene.
"We are committed to keeping all of our residents safe, including those in our university communities. This act of violence on one of our college campuses is extremely troubling," Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski said in a statement.
Towson University President Kim Schatzel said in a statement university officials have been working with the police "to identify and arrest those responsible for the shooting as well as those who unlawfully trespassed the campus. We remain resolute that the safety of our community and campus is our top priority. As shared by Baltimore County Police Chief Melissa Hyatt earlier today, this is an isolated incident and there is no continuing threat to TU's campus. All areas of the campus are now accessible to our community."
Said Baltimore County Police Chief Melissa Hyatt: "At this time, we believe this to be an isolated incident."
While police said there's no active threat to the university campus community, students like Maclang said this is not the way they imagined starting off the new school year.
"A lot of people like gather here. Like, I sometimes come here with my friends just to hang out, and just to know something like that would happen, you know, where I would just be eating lunch or dinner or whatever. You know, I could have been one of the students. It's kind of scary," Maclang said.
Towson University is offering counseling and support services to students, faculty and staff. Officials say there will be an increased police presence out of an abundance of caution.
