Sept. 11 War Crimes Judge Ponders Way Forward
FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) -- A war-crimes judge at Guantanamo Bay is pondering the way forward for five detainees accused in the Sept. 11 attacks after ordering a separate trial for one of them.
The tribunal reconvenes Wednesday afternoon at the U.S. naval base in Cuba for more proceedings involving Ramzi Binalshibh.
Army Col. James Pohl severed Binalshibh's case from those of four co-defendants last month amid concerns that issues, including questions about his mental health, would unduly delay progress on the larger case.
Prosecutors have asked Pohl to reconsider his severance order. They say the issues peculiar to Binalshibh can be resolved in a timely fashion without trying him separately.
The hearing is being shown on closed-circuit video at Fort Meade, near Baltimore.
