Ron Matz, Charlestowne Retirement Community Accept ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
BALTIMORE (WJZ)—If you haven't been under an ice bucket lately, you've probably been under a rock. The Ice Bucket Challenge has social media on fire, raising millions for the ALS Association.
Ron Matz took the challenge on air Monday morning and he reports a group of Baltimore seniors is joining in the effort too.
The seniors at the Charlestowne Retirement Community in Catonsville are up for the challenge.
"We're challenging every continuing care and retirement community in the whole wide world to join in with us," a resident said.
And in front of Jimmy's in Fells Point on Monday morning so was WJZ.
"It's the coldest I've ever felt, but it's for a good cause," Matz said.
The Ronster was soaked with a five gallon bucket of ice water courtesy of restaurant owner Jimmy Filipidis, who accepted the challenge a few minutes later.
The Charlestowne seniors weren't kidding. They're not only taking the challenge but making a donation too.
"We're dousing ourselves with ice water and ice and then making a contribution to the ALS fund," a resident said.
The ice bucket challenge has now raised $15.6 million. That's compared to just 1.8 million for the same time period last year.
"I'm challenging Tim Williams next," Matz said.
Cold cash for a great cause, the Ice Bucket Challenge is designed to raise awareness of ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease. The ALS Association says donations have come from existing donors and from more than 300,000 new donors.
