Senator Proposes Changes To Transportation Bill
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- With gas prices on the rise, Sen. Rob Garagiola is proposing alternatives to raise revenue for
transportation projects.
One would scrap a 10-cent gas tax increase, but it would still index the gas tax to adjust for inflation while capping any
increase at 1 cent a year. Another would phase in a gas tax increase at 4.5 cents in 2011, 3 cents in 2012 and 3 cents in 2013, and cut indexing.
Both proposals would increase the state vehicle emissions inspection fee from $14 every two years to $40.
His amendments to his bill, which he discussed Wednesday at a hearing, would also increase mass transit fares and exempt farm equipment and commercial trucks and trailers from a vehicle registration fee increase.
