Security Upped At South Carroll HS Day After Shooting Threat Prompted Lockdown
SYKESVILLE, Md. (WJZ)—The investigation continues after threats of a shooting put a Carroll County high school on lockdown.
Linh Bui reports police have now stepped up security.
Many students are still shaken up.
Students at South Carroll High School remain on edge one day after threats of a shooting put the school on lockdown.
What was the mood like at school Friday?
"It was pretty scary. Everyone was pretty nervous and shaky. But the teachers did a really good job making sure that everybody felt safe," said Sarah Klein, high school senior.
Just before classes let out Thursday afternoon, law enforcement swarmed the school after several threats were phoned in.
"The anonymous caller in those calls explained that there would be a shooting and chaos at South Carroll High School," said Col. Phil Kasten, Carroll County Sheriff's Department.
The school went on lockdown. Family members anxiously waited outside for hours until students were finally released at 7 p-m.
"We had to get on the ground and under desks and I was in the science room, so there were big tables and we all just climbed under and all of our friends just kind of huddled together," said Taylor Bracalente, South Carroll High School student.
"I don't think anything like this has happened," said Hannah Grimsley, South Carroll High School.
Officials determined the threat was not credible.
Right now, investigators are still following up on leads, trying to find the person or people responsible for this incident.
Friday, students noticed increased security.
"When I pulled in this morning, there were quite a few cops on this side of the building and behind the building," said Timothy Double, high school senior.
"It didn't take away the fact that it was scary to come. But it helped. It made me feel more safe," Klein said.
Students are ready to move forward but say it might take time to get back to normal.
Anyone with information about this incident should contact the Carroll County Sheriff's Office.
