School Remembers 8-Year-Old Hero Killed In House Fire & His Brother
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A tragic house fire kills two young boys and destroys a family's home.
Jessica Kartalija explains how the children are being remembered.
A special celebration was held Thursday at a school the two boys attended, while their mother says she will do what she can to ensure her daughter's happiness.
Four-year-old Wynter is all smiles, leading the yellow brick road at her preschool graduation. Just this week, a fire gutted her family's Bruce Street home. Flames trapped Wynter and her two brothers on the second floor.
Eight-year-old Desario dropped Wynter from the second story window to safety and then went back to try and save his asthmatic 6-year-old brother, Sean. Sean died at the scene. Desario later died in the hospital.
Now a preschool graduation has become a celebration in remembrance of the two little boys.
"If you ever question what is a man? You look at my baby boy. Because he put family first, and that's what matters. He loved his sister and his brother," mother Rokea McCullough said.
The school is a special place for the McCulloughs. Their mom worked there, the boys graduated from there and Wynter just started.
As friends looked on, Rokea McCullough talked about her children.
"My baby, he was an asthmatic. He hated getting on the machine. He doesn't have to no more though. He's alright now," she said.
Rokea told the school that despite what happened this week, she wants Wynter to enjoy herself.
"I was glad to see that Wynter was very happy and smiling," said Myrtice Hockaday. "And the mother and dad, I think they're trying to do the best they can with such a tragic loss."
A nearby church has offered to pay for funeral services. M&T Bank has set up a fund for the McCullough family and is accepting donations on their behalf.
Family members say they suspect this may have been an electrical fire, but officially the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
